Free to Fly

I went back to Ohio to pay my respects to my Uncle Lanny this past weekend. Although it wasn’t the happiest of occasions, it was heartwarming to have family gathered around once again. Lanny cherished family and he would’ve loved seeing everyone.

I consciously selected these photos of him alone (excepting the first one, in his mother’s arms). If I had included all the photos of Lanny with family they would’ve numbered in the thousands!

Lanny and his wife Sharon shared many milestone moments over their 63 year marriage (roughly 2/3 of his 88 years), but he made it clear that the family ones were the most important.

Keeping up with three children, ten grandchildren, and four great grandchildren occupied a great deal of their time. Whether babysitting, attending school and sports functions, or celebrating birthdays and special events, Sharon and Lanny were there.

His warm smile, husky laugh, and wit will be sorely missed. Thankfully, he wrote down most of his clever poems and he recited a Christmas one that I was fortunate to record (see video below).

As you can see in the photos, Lanny’s fascination with planes began at an early age. He had wanted to become a pilot but sadly, the military said he wasn’t tall enough. Now his body no longer holds him back and he is free to fly…
