Let the Recovery Begin

I haven’t had much time to post since I returned home on Saturday about midday. My first order of business was to fix the sections of my fence that Hurricane Milton had blown out. Thankfully, the pieces were nearby and it was a relatively simple project (for now, I have some reinforcing to do but that will have to wait).

Sunday and Monday I had an inside job, removing the drywall and plasterboard that Hurricane Helene had flooded. It was a project that I had put on hold in order to evacuate from Milton. Two damaging hurricanes in 13 days, what a mess!

I only needed to remove 24 inches but I took out 4 feet because, let’s face it, the odds of my house flooding again are pretty high. So I’m taking some extra steps now in order to, hopefully, prevent having to do this again in the future.

It was hard work, made a bit more difficult since I still didn’t have electricity. But after 23 hours of demo I removed it all. Afterward, I sprayed the newly exposed surfaces with mold control twice (just to be sure).

Thankfully, linemen restored my power around 4pm yesterday so I was able to eat a hot meal and clean up before crawling into bed for a much needed rest.

Speaking of being grateful, the photo above shows where my neighbors’ 25-foot tall palm tree gracefully landed. Right in between their house and my white fence, without damaging either one. I am still in disbelief over that. Had the tree blown even slightly east or west it would have taken out one of our roofs! As I’ve mentioned before, it could’ve been worse.

I’ll leave you to ponder this palm tree down the block, I still can’t fathom how that 15′ tree threaded itself through that 4′ fence but then again, hurricanes are wild!

  1. Glad to hear you are safe and the house is still standing.  Hope Westley is not giving you too much trouble “helping”.  Take care. Lori & Tori loritori@cs.com
